In Episode 283 of the Further Your Lifestyle podcast, Chris answers the question, “What’s one decision you made that quietly changed the direction of your life?” by explaining that choosing to do the hard thing—rather than chasing shortcuts—has driven his biggest personal and business growth over the last two to two and a half years. He references Adam Sullivan’s point that the “hard way” is often the most direct path to real results, using the example of becoming certified as a personal trainer. Chris shares how doubling down on his business by taking risks—getting a storage unit, hiring his first staff member, expanding to multiple units, and eventually moving into a much larger warehouse—helped fuel consistent growth. He emphasizes that hard decisions build resilience, expand thinking, and compound over time, and he invites listeners to share their own life-changing decision.

Yo, yo, yo. Welcome back to the Fill of Your Lifestyle Podcast Conversations on Lifestyle, Passions, and Hustles. My name's Chris. I am your host, and I'm super excited to be back here having the conversation with you. We've got one more question that we're going to go through this week coming back from the last couple of episodes, and I've just kind of banked these up straight back to back. And it's a really good one. And I I read it and I knew straight away what I wanted to talk about. And I think that's really, really great because it gets me excited, gets me motivated, gets me encouraged. And that's what I want to do for you. Now, if you do enjoy these episodes, please hit like, hit subscribe, follow along. We drop these every week, 9 a.m. Sunday morning. And I would not want you to miss out on the opportunity to further your lifestyle. That's my goal here. We're going to roll the intro and let's get into it.
So the question that has come through is what's one decision you made that quietly changed the direction of your life and what would someone else learn from it? And this one resonates with me really, really well because I think over the last probably probably the last two years, two and a half years, and I'm probably leaning more and more into it. Like I haven't intentionally no I didn't probably intentionally notice it until later, like more recently.
But I think I think to answer the question is it's like doing doing the hard thing rather than trying to find the the easy way through. And this actually resonates really, really well because I've been thinking about this over the last few weeks because I I listened to an episode from it was just on his TikTok, I think, Adam Sullivan, and I really, really appreciate the guy because he just speaks candor, truth, and there's there's just no BS with him. And I was just quite encouraged by what he said because he said he realized that there's no point doing the shortcut way or the easy way or trying to find all the easy ways. You're better off just doing the hard thing because usually that is actually the easiest way to get the result. And what he meant by this was like he wanted to become a personal trainer, he wanted to be able to do what he wanted to do. And the only way to do that was he had to do a certain had to go study, had to go do a certain course. And by doing that, that meant he was certified to be able to start teaching as a personal trainer. And I think that's really important because yeah, there's no way around that, right? You could you could be uncertified and let people know, but I'm pretty sure in some, even in some states, you have to have a level of certificate to be able to teach and do those kind of things because of obviously there's a risk of injury and things like that. I I don't know the details, right? But he was so right, right. And for me, it's kind of like over the years as I've been building my business, there
was a couple of years there at the start where I was kind of like just not all in. I was kind of like just cruising, kind of doing it more part-time, even though I needed it as a full-time income. It wasn't until I put in skin in the game where I said, you know what, I'm gonna get a storage unit. We're gonna start to double down on this. And we got storage unit, and then I hired my first staff member, and then we we had two storage units, and then within two years, we had five storage units. And now a year and a half later, after that, we've been in our warehouse, which was three and a half times bigger than those five storage units combined, and the growth has just been incredible to see. And the only way we were able to get that was doing the hard thing. And the hard thing meant taking the risk, getting the storage unit, being able to bring on someone on board, paying them money to work for me, leveraging them, taking the risk of knowing like, okay, I'm going to start to pour money into the business with the idea that it's going to grow and it's going to give me more money back. Now, sure, we've been profitable every single year. And at the same time, the growth has been huge growth. We've grown on average, I think, 18% every single quarter for the last almost
six years. Obviously, the profit hasn't necessarily grown from a digit perspective, but obviously, if the top level's higher, the percentage down below, if that's not really changing much, it's going to increase the outcome, like the output that you get in your pocket. But at the same time, it's like there's been opportunities that come along, and people have said, hey, look, we have this. Would you like to do this? And I think about it and I'm like, oh banar. And then it's like, you know what? This is an opportunity that most people will say no to because it is going to be hard work. It's going to be scary. It's going to be difficult. It's going to be uncomfortable. And I don't necessarily know how I'm going to be able to do it. But you back yourself, you trust your gut, and you go, you know what? I'm going to go after it. I'm going to do it. And the rewards of that, one, it builds resilience. It builds you the ability to think beyond yourself and to think bigger. And I love when people challenge you in that way because some people come to you with an opportunity because they know you're capable. Some people come to you an opportunity just because it's got nothing to do with you either. But you know, when people want to work with you, they want to work with you because, sure, they might be getting an an outcome from that, like a hidden agenda. But if if I wanted to achieve a hidden agenda for myself, I'm going to want to work with someone that is going to get me
that best result possible. And I think a lot of the time we we forget what the hard things do for us. I mean, there's David Goggins that he he talks about do hard things. And the reason why you do that is because it creates a better version of yourself. It creates a journey for you to go through to figure out, okay, I don't know how to do this, but I'm going to go do what it takes to learn this because I want what's on the other side, right? And that's the only reason it works, is because if you if you're not interested in the thing on the other side, why would you go do this hard stuff? And you, you, I mean, firstly, you won't even be motivated. So right now, if you're feeling that you're not motivated, you don't want what you want, why are you doing it? Right. And a lot of time people say, I'm doing it because my parents have told me to do it. Some people doing it because they don't have a choice. Maybe they're working a job that is crap because they don't have a choice because they need the money. But I think there is a level there of doing the hard thing, which is getting out of that toxic job or getting out of that toxic situation, having to go through some hard stuff. Like it's going to be scary, it's going to be fearful, it's going to be hard in terms of look, the the circumstances, the consequences, and the challenges and the stress that everyone has to deal with is going to be on different levels depending on your situation. But to then get into the position where you are in a safe environment or you are working with people that respect you, or you are able to save time commuting, or you are able to, whatever it may be, you're going to have a better longer-term longevity outcome from that. And that's that's the reason why I work so hard in my business and on my business is because for me, I learned so much, and by learning so much, we're able to equip the business to compound quicker, to then grow quicker, to then get the results quicker, to get me to where I want to be quicker. I mean, at the end of the day, it's all it's all about what I'm trying to build, right? Sure, I want to serve customers, I want to create value, I want to give other people jobs.
But you know, this is my mission, my dream, my goal. And if you want that, right, there's no easy way for it. The easy, the easy way is the hard way. And the hard way means you're gonna have to get uncomfortable, you have to be who you've never been before. And not in a bad way. It just means you have to make tough decisions, you have to hire people, you have to work longer hours, or maybe you have to take bigger risks, or you have to be willing to team up with people, you might have to be willing to talk to people, making tough conversations, tough calls, outreach, putting yourself out there on the internet, all these things. It exposes you, you have to get vulnerable, you have to be real, you may fail. Like all of that stuff is scary. But if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. And that is why if you do it and you're willing to commit to it, the hard stuff always wins. The hard stuff always wins. And I love seeing people talk about where they are because they didn't, and I know it's cliche because you ask someone's like, Oh, all of a sudden you look like a success overnight, but how did you get here? And they will say, 10 years of hard work, and that hard work is literally a lot of the time we don't see those things of those people that have now all of a sudden are popping up and they've got a hundred thousand subscribers or followers and they've hit the big time, but they've been working chipping away at this for years, people just haven't seen it, and that's because the exposure of their compounding of growth as they do more and they become more in the public eye, all of a sudden they become relevant to more people because their exposure has grown. But they probably haven't changed what they've been doing for for years. It's just all of a sudden now becoming more known because it's coming more popular, because they're getting better at it, it's getting cleaner, like I'm talking about content-wise, or maybe their business has grown and so more people are buying from them, and it naturally expands. That's why if you're consistent, if you can repeat the ability of getting the results and keep doing that, and you do that over a long period of time, it will win. It always does because it's just that it's that tipping point, right? And that's a really good book as well. Go read that book anyway. That that's that's my thoughts on this, and I think you should be willing to try it. And you don't have to do this in a
in a in a perspective of like, oh my gosh, I've got to sell everything and go after my dreams. But do smaller risks, right? Figure out ways that you can test this as at a smaller level. What's one decision? And look, that's that's how we'll finish it. We'll finish it there. I won't go on and on and on, but I will ask you the question. I'll finish with this. I'll ask you the question, you can answer down in the comments below. What's one decision you made that quietly changed the direction of your life? And what would someone else learn from it? I I would love to hear this because perspective is everything. And that's for me, like that's how I learn is hearing what other people have to say to be able to give me perspective, fresh ideas, and motivation and encouragement. Folks, that's what we're all about here. If you did enjoy this, please hit like, hit subscribe, come back here again next week. We'll be doing it all again. And yeah, I'll see you when I'm looking at you. Ciao
