In Episode 274 of the Further Your Lifestyle podcast, Chris records an off-the-cuff solo conversation right after a run, reflecting on how running helps him reset and how he’s rebuilding after a serious injury that sidelined him for a year. He shares a practical mindset for anyone stuck between a desired outcome and unclear next steps: reverse-engineer the goal, “do the math,” and focus on consistent reps. Using his reselling business as an example, he explains how early revenue targets didn’t match the underlying numbers, how learning and iteration led to growth over multiple years, and how new scale brings new challenges like higher costs and cash-flow pressure. He encourages listeners to ask tough questions, stop procrastinating and comparing, stay kind to themselves, and do one thing daily that compounds toward their goal.

Welcome And Post Run Reset
SPEAKER_00Yo, yo, yo, welcome back to the Feather Your Lifestyle Podcast Conversations on Lifestyle Passions and Hustles. My name's Chris. I am your host, and I'm super excited to be back here having the conversation with you. Episode 274 today. And we're going off the cuff. We're we're I haven't prepared anything prior to jumping into this. I actually just got back from run literally about 12 minutes ago. And I just figured let's just jump in, let's just let's just have a chat. And while I was running, I mean, one thing that I find the most enjoyable thing for me is to actually get out and reset, and that is by running. If you've been part of my broader content creation over the last five, six, seven years, even longer than that, actually, 10 years, I originally started my whole journey on YouTube and in the content space, documenting my running journey and losing losing a whole bunch of weight and going from you know, couch to 5K, going from 5k to 10k, then going from 10k to half marathon and then half marathon to marathon and then marathon to ultra marathon. And that was that was a crazy journey. And then unfortunately, I after training for my third ultra marathon, I got hit with a pretty bad, bad injury, which meant I had to stop for running for
Running Journey And Injury Comeback
SPEAKER_00a year, which that that broke me. And but now I'm starting to get back to a little bit of a groove where I'm able to get out and do two runs a week and slowly building that back up. And we did the trail running series not that long ago. But anyway, while I was out there, I was having to think about what I wanted to chat about. And I think it's it's I think it's a really great conversation, really, for anyone that wants an outcome has an outcome in mind, and you're you're kind of stuck between that gap of you're not getting the results or you don't know how to get that outcome. You don't know how to get there. And this is probably something that I've always struggled with, and I will always struggle with it simply because when I get to where I want to go, then there's the next thing that I'm already working on. And I think automatically it's okay, well, how do I get here? What am I gonna do to get there? How do I get there? I don't know what to do. And that's what I'm gonna talk, talk about how I kind of manage that. Again, no notes on this one. We're just literally going straight heart to heart. So if this
The Gap Between Dream And Plan
SPEAKER_00sounds like something you're interested in, then buckle up, cozy up, and we're gonna roll the intro and let's get into it. So I think for me, every every time I've gone on a journey, be it running related, business related, or even just prior to doing any of this and working in a corporate role, there's always this question of, okay, you before you go do something, you don't know how to do it a lot of the time. So going for an interview for your first time, you don't know how to do that. You've never been on an interview before. So you prepare for it and you you you figure out, okay, this is what I have to do. You get feedback or you get maybe some encouragement or you get some insight from those around you, mentors, parents, family, friends, whatever, and you learn how to do it, and then you go do it, and then it's not too bad. And then, okay, maybe you get a job and you've never done that job before, but now you have to be willing to learn and you have to have a uh a mindset and be willing to to grow from that. And this this will be a constant in your life. Even when I started my reselling business, I I I mean, I had goals, I had dreams, I didn't know what it was going to be other than that I wanted it to be mine. Um when I started, it was the first year I'm like, I'm gonna make $100,000. And I honestly I thought that was quite doable. We did $56,000 and when I look at the gap between, well, there was probably indicators which determined that I was no way going to get this result. I just assumed those results were going to happen. But at the same time, if I hadn't set a goal, you're not even working towards anything. So I think a lot of the time we we need to be just actually doing the things that are going to get us closer
Reverse Engineer Goals With Numbers
SPEAKER_00to that outcome. And a lot of the time, this is basic math. A lot of the time, it's actually breaking it down and re-reverse engineering what it is that you want to do. So if you want to do a certain amount of sales in one year, if you want to be able to run a marathon, if you want to be able to lift a certain amount of weight, if you want to be able to play guitar, if you want to all these different things, well, it comes down to reps and it comes down to actually doing the work. Now, a good thing about sales, you you can use it down to the generation of like, okay, well, you can have a sell one item for $100,000 and you'll make make the result. Or you can sell two for $50,000, or you can sell five for $20,000 and it goes on and on and on. And before I started, I I had no prior history of what my business was going to look like. I didn't know what I was going to sell, I didn't know what I was going to do, and I didn't know how I was going to do it. All I knew is I wasn't going to figure it out. But I think in my first year, my ASP was probably closer to $51 or $49. And to get $100,000, let's say if you're doing a $50 ASP, you need to sell 2,000 items to make $100,000. Right? Now, I think in our first year, we we I can't remember how much we did. Obviously, it wasn't that. But my point is, if I had actually started to look at the numbers, started to understand the numbers, I would probably have done it. Now, going to the next year, I learned from what happened, what worked, what didn't work, how I was going to do it. And I think the second year we did, I think we did 86,000. So we got we got a little bit closer. We almost got there. And then the third year we did 126. And then from there it's compounded. We went to 200 plus. We did 300, and then I think, yeah, anyway, last year we ended up doing over 500,000. So it's been a it's been a crazy, crazy journey. But the thing is, every time I go to make the next jump or next thing that I want to do, there's always this, I don't know how to do it. I don't know what I'm gonna do. Right, like right now, where we're doing the most volume we've ever done, we're doing the most sales we've ever done. But but at the same time, our costs are higher than ever because there's more pressures and more challenges, there's
Scaling Up Brings New Pressures
SPEAKER_00more competitors in the space, and I feel like we're getting squeezed more than we've ever gotten squeezed. And now cash flow is falling, right? So when I look at this situation, it's like, well, I don't know what to do because I've never been in this situation at this scale, right? And it's not an answer of I don't know what to do and I'm not gonna do anything about it. It's more the point of I have to figure it out. So if I want the outcome to be more cash flow or more profit or more this or more that, what am I doing to get more of those things? That's the answer. And a lot of the time we we we actually stop to kind of think about these things. If if you're having injury issues, right? Hindsight tells me this now. If I'm having injury issues, what am I doing next time that is going to make sure that those injuries do not occur again? Now, of course, there could be new injuries, but I don't know what I don't know. And this this is the same same information that you need to understand that a lot of the time we don't know what we don't know. We're we're trying to move forward to an outcome which is a dream and a goal and ambition. But if you if you don't have the dream, the goal, ambition, how are you meant to work towards it? And a lot of people stop, a lot of people fa I wouldn't say fail. I think failure comes when you give up, right? And to be frank, yeah, a lot of people do give up because it becomes too hard or they don't know what to do. But a lot of the time, people just don't want to ask the tough questions, they don't want to do the harder work and they don't want to be realistic about it, right? For me, I'm I'm keen to make this happen. I'm keen to grow this into something over the next 10, 20 years because I'm still I'm still young, right? I mean, if I can if I could do this for another 10 years and I'll be in a situation where I'm like I don't have to work again, well then maybe so. But at the same time, that's not always the reality. But you hear about people that have built businesses and they'll talk about that it took us 10 years to get here, and then it looks like all of a sudden everything's just blowing up. Now, this is not an episode about my business. This is an episode to remind you that if you have an an outcome that you want, you need to really be challenging yourself. As are you even doing the things today that are going to get you closer to where you want to be? I'm just using my business as a great analogy
Procrastination And The Book Maths
SPEAKER_00for it. And it it's I guess the best way to do this is to I guess to describe this, is I remember having a chat with someone, oh, this is about three, four years ago, and we were kind of like setting our personal goals, what we wanted to do for the year. And he said, Oh, I wanted to read 10 books this year. And I'm like, okay, that's pretty cool. So it's basically a book a month. And I think we got to month six, and he's only read one book. And I said, Well, well, mate, the math doesn't add up. How are you how are you going to get through the rest of the books? And I I don't know what it is, but I feel like sometimes we we are our own worst enemies when it comes to procrastinating. We're our own worst enemies expecting things are just going to happen, things are just going to land in our laps. But there's this bubble of gap which we don't really know what's going to happen there, and we think it's all going to figure itself out. Now, a lot of the time, if you are working daily, doing things that are working you closer to where you want to be, things compound, things move quick, and then most of the time you figure it out to make it happen. But don't don't be frustrated, don't be too hard on yourself when we don't hit the goals we wanted, even though we did everything we could. Because there's elements of this which we we don't know. And if I want to get back out there and do my next so I'm at the moment I'm training for a 10k run, I have to be out there doing training. I have to be out there putting in the reps. I can't just go out, I could probably go out and do the 10k, but I open myself up to pain and suffering and a miserable run and injury. So the idea is you build up the one, it's a it's some of it's mental and confidence. That's a lot of the time what it is. But it's also just shaping and toning my my my my body, my strides, my ability to do for that amount of time. It's probably taken me about an hour and maybe a bit more, and I think that's that's all it is. And then it's just the confidence of
Training Reps Build Real Confidence
SPEAKER_00it's just the confidence of actually I'm okay, I'm ready to do this. So this is just a quick little encouragement to remind you that if you have an outcome that you are trying to achieve, ask yourself, do the math. Are you doing the things that are gonna add up to actually make that happen? Because if you're not, well, you need to you need to figure out that gap, that delta, that difference. Because if you can't figure out the difference, and a lot of times the difference is unknown, but are you doing things to figure out the unknown? Are you doing things to figure out how do I solve this problem? I'm working on a number of different problems. I'm working on a number of different things that we're trying to add to our business. I'm trying to work on a few different things to level up our business, I'm trying to solve problems because we've never done them before. They're problems, they're good problems, they're problems problems in the sense that okay, if we can do this, then we can do that. So how do we do this? We try this, we try that, we think about this, we test that. Trial and error. It works, it doesn't work, we do it again, we try again, it works, it works, it works, and now now it's working, right? That's that's essentially how we figure it out. So yeah, quick little encouragement. Just felt great coming out from the run, and I felt, you know what? I'm out here doing the reps, and the reps don't have to be bigger or better than anyone else. They have to be reps that are just one step closer to where you want to be. And for me, today that was that, and that's a win. So for you, don't be so hard on yourself, stop comparing yourself to
Be Kind, Compound, And Subscribe
SPEAKER_00others. Maybe we should talk about that next. But I wanted to leave it there. Be kind to yourself, and just just remember that you've got time, but don't delay the time because you think you have time. Use that time to compound and get to where you want to be. One step closer to where you want to be. Do one thing every day that's gonna get you closer to where you want to be, and that's how you'll further your lifestyle. Appreciate you being here. I'll be back here again next week. Uh, if you did enjoy this, please subscribe, consider subscribing, share it with someone else, and uh yeah, I'll see you on the flip side. Ciao,
