In Episode 257 of the Further Lifestyle Podcast, host Chris continues last week’s resilience conversation by exploring what to do when life and work feel like they’re constantly changing. He talks about how external pressures and media noise can fuel anxiety, and shares key mindset shifts: expect change rather than fear it, zoom out to evaluate progress over longer timeframes, avoid distorted comparisons to others’ curated wins, and simplify by prioritizing your own consistency, clarity, and focus. Chris emphasizes controlling what you can—effort, attitude, and decisions—while accepting what you can’t, and encourages staying in your lane, pivoting with purpose, and not abandoning your path too early. He closes with reflective questions about reacting vs. adapting and staying focused amid distractions.

Why Change Feels So Heavy
SPEAKER_00Yo, yo, yo, welcome back to the Feather Your Lifestyle Podcast Conversations on Lifestyle, Passions, and Hustles. My name's Chris. I am your host, and I'm super excited to be back here having the conversation with you. Episode 257 today, and we're kind of continuing on from last week's episode talking about resilience. Whereas today we're talking about, you know, when everything feels like it's changing, what do you do? And the reason why I'm having this kind of conversation again is because there's been a lot of things going on in the last few weeks just with things in the world that are out of our control. And things are changing. It could be just financial pressures, it could be challenges, you know, at work, it could be challenges in the the world environment that you operate in. And there's a lot of anxiety, there's a lot of stress, there's a lot of challenges, there's a lot of unknowns, and you know, probably the media presents things in a way which make you feel uncomfortable, right? And that that's the that's why I'm doing this episode. But I think it's relevant because maybe, maybe not even that stuff is relevant to you at this point, and you know, you don't really care about that. But I think this is the reason why I've thought about this episode today is I'm doing this episode for the people that have ever felt like maybe the ground is shifting under your feet, or like what used to work doesn't work anymore, or everyone else has it figured out except for you, or like you're putting in all this effort and you're not seeing the results back. And I get it, you're not alone. I feel that too. There's a lot of things that I'm doing, and I just feel like I'm banging my head against a wall. And the whole idea of this episode is how do we navigate this change? How do we navigate uncertainty? And how do we navigate through the noise without losing yourself? And it is another probably that next level of this resilience conversation that we had last week. Because no matter whatever industry you're in, whatever job you do, or whatever life you're living, or whatever goal you're working towards, these feelings will show up everywhere in life. That's just the reality of it. So that sounds like something that you want to have a conversation about, then we're gonna get into this. I'm gonna roll the intro in a moment. If you do enjoy this episode, make sure you give me a big thumbs up. You know, yeah, subscribe, comment, and you can continue the conversation. And if you think someone else needs to hear this, then please send it to them as well. Share it, you know, share it to them directly. Right? Let's uh let's roll the intro and let's get into it. So the world is always going to be changing, and you know, this is not news. This shouldn't be news to anyone. You know, what worked before won't always work necessarily now or later. Things evolve. We get new opportunities. I mean, think of like how we used to sell on eBay, you know, five years ago to now, now we have live commerce. There's lots of things changing. The way we operate, the way we do things, it's demanded differently from our customers. What I'm saying is things will always change, whether it's the technology, whether it's the world we operate in, how we operate, you know, the cost of living, all these things. And a lot of it's out of our control. But people move on, right? You know, we we continue to move on while trends shift, environments involve. And this the mistake isn't that things change, it's the mistake expecting them not to. And I think that's where people get it wrong is we expect that everything's just going to be smooth sailing because you have a good run, right? And then when it's not, we freak out and we we we don't know what to do. I mean, that's where resilience comes in. But then at the same time, I think you need to change your mindset. You know, just because you think things are going to be smooth, there's always going to be changes. Most of the time they're unexpected. Most of the time they're things that were not on your bingo card. Point number two I want to make today is if it doesn't always pay you immediately, you know, you know, week to week, things can be very discouraging because you're not seeing the results, even day to day. But when we look from year to year, that's where the progress is. And you know, I can pull this from my from my business, whereas, you know, in the short term, things have been a challenge. When I say short term, we're talking six to three months, which is, I mean, for me now is is a short term. Back in the day, that was long term. But you know, now when I zoom out over a one and a two and a five-year perspective, you know, we are still up, we are still growing, we are still seeing the results of a better level of you know, outcome. And that's the truth, is you've got to really make sure you know when to look at short term and know when to look at long term. Because short-term feelings lie, feelings will be confusing because you don't have all the facts and figures, or there's anomalies in these smaller bubbles. But then when you zoom out, you can start to see the patterns, and those patterns will tell you the truth. Now, if you zoom out and you have not seen progress, it's going to be telling you the truth. So point number three to all of this is comparison is distorting your reality. It's very easy to look around and see, oh, someone else is doing better than me. And this is easy to do when, especially when you're running a business and see that, oh, okay, because you look at your peers, you look at your competitors, and you think, oh, they're doing this, they're doing this, why are they ahead? Why isn't it working for me? Now, no one's exactly the same as anyone else, but you have to be careful here because people will show curated success, people will share partial stories, and people share surface-level wins. But they don't always, I'm not saying this is what everyone does, but there is a reality of not everyone shows their struggles, not everyone shows their history, not everyone shows their context. And this is where you need to be careful is because you're not actually behind. You're just looking sideways too much. You want to be comparing to yourself. That's the only thing or the only one or the only person that matters when it comes to comparing. It's good to get like a sense check of seeing where you know you are baseline-wise when you're comparing to peers at the same level, whether it's through life and you know, business or your work or your job or your career. But make sure you bring it back to yourself and focus on what have you achieved, where have you come from, what are you getting towards? Everyone has a different story, everyone has a different journey, right? And some people have different steps they've taken or different risks or opportunities that you haven't had, and you think that's unfair. But we all have our unfair advantages, and we all have our consequences we have to deal with with the decisions that we make as well. So please take that into account. Number four, I think also when it comes to all these things that are going on, is sometimes we probably overcomplicate it more than it needs to be. You know, from comments, you know, we we have too many voices, we have too many opinions, we have too many too much confusion. If you just look anywhere in social media, everyone's got their opinion and thoughts, which everyone's valid to have. It's just we absorb it all, we try to take it all in, and we overcomplicate then our ability to kind of like figure out what is right and wrong for us, what is what are we happy to accept, what are we not happy to accept, because we're overcomplicating it. You know, we're getting people's strategies, we're getting people's opinions, we're getting people's shortcuts, we're getting other people's values, we're getting other people's ideas. What you really need is you need consistency, clarity, and focus. Now, these are your own opinions, these are your own consistency, clarity, and focus. You need to decide what that is for you. And then all the other stuff, it becomes noise. So we can't over be overcomplicated by that stuff. But if you're gonna fill your head with everyone else's opinions and thoughts and whatever, not saying to, you know, be an emu and stick your head in the ground and ignore everything, but you do need to make sure you it's good to have what's understanding what's going on, but make sure you're staying focused and true to what it is you're working towards. And the reality is things are gonna be out of your control, right? And that's point number five. There aren't gonna be things out of your time out of your control. Economy, timing, external environment, wars, all these different things, right? But what you can do is you can still control your effort, your attitude, your decisions, and you know, your, I guess, your motivation or your resilience to show up, right? You can't control the conditions like what I've just stated, but you can control how you show up in them, right? If it's raining and you're training for a run, are you running in the rain or are you gonna just skip? You've got to weigh up what makes sense. Now, if it's a weather storm and it's dangerous, maybe you don't run. But if it's just like light triple ray and it's like, well, it's not the end of the world, right? So we have to decide what's in our control and what's not. And there's a lot of things that will not be in your control. So you've got to figure out what you can control, what can you manage, what can you do, and then focus on that. And then it leads to point six, which is staying in your lane. This is everything, right? This is gonna come up multiple times in your life when you have a life, you know, event or whatever. So an example of this is you want to make sure when you're doing what it is that you're doing, you get to choose your life, right? You know, you can watch me, you can see what I'm doing. Maybe you're inspired and motivated to go after your own dreams, which is what I want you to do. But you want to stop chasing what others are doing. Don't chase my life. Chase a lifestyle that you want to create. Stop pivoting every time something looks better. Now, this one you have to be careful of because there is a difference between pivoting to survive and pivoting to thrive, and then pivoting to just seem relevant. And sometimes we don't need to do those things. Like we don't need to be doing what everyone else is doing because FOMO. You want to be pivoting and adjusting to what works towards getting you closer to where you want to be, right? And that's why you might have to adjust, right? And you also need to stop abandoning your path too early. When times get tough, we spoke about this in Resilience episode yes last week. When times get tough, don't give up. Figure out how do you navigate through it. It's at the end of the day, I feel like the people who win are the ones who stay long enough to figure it out. It's that simple. It's complicated, but it is that simple. So a couple of questions for you before we wrap up is one, where in your life does it feel like things have changed? Things aren't what you used to think. Now, with that, are you reacting to those things or you're adapting to those things? And then thirdly, are you focused on your path or are you being distracted by others or the world and its you know challenges it brings? Three questions for you. Ask them per I mean, you know, answer them personally to yourself, or you can share them in a in the comments down below. But you know, life isn't supposed to feel like a s a stable flow all the time. I mean, as much as we want it to, that can make things boring as well. But things will come and go, things will change, results will fluctuate. That's just that's just that's just the way it is, right? And unfortunately, you know, people will come and go in our lives as well. And if you can stay grounded in who you are, in who you are, that's what matters the most. And if you can stay consistent in what you do, you'll outlast most of the noise. I think people really neglect the ability to be able to see long-term success or growth or whatever, because a lot of the time people neglect just being willing to be consistent, stick it through, figure it out, and and get that grit. And I'm not saying it's like, oh, you've got to be a hustler and you've got to be doing this and gonna be doing that. No. Do it quietly, do it sensibly, do it safely, do it calmly, and do it proudly as you move towards where it is that you want to go. I I don't know where you want to go, right? I don't know your dreams, your goals, aspirations. But point is if you do want to further your lifestyle, it's gonna take reps, it's gonna take, you know, all of this resilience to go through showing up on a day-in, day out basis. Things are gonna feel like things are changing, things are gonna feel like they're out of your control. But that's gonna happen regardless. So if you can navigate through that, be comfortable through that, then you will see the results in the long run of what you're trying to attain or achieve. Appreciate you being here. If you did have any questions or you wanted to continue the conversation, you can chuck it down in the comments down below.
